Don Souder, Jr. Scholar-Athlete Award Winners Announced

The MPSA is proud to recognize the 2009 recipients of the Don E. Souder, Jr. Scholar-Athlete Award. This award is given each year to a senior girl, and a senior boy, who have excelled in both athletics and academics.

This year's female recipient is Allison Cooper of Presbyterian Christian School. Over the past few years, Allison has helped lead the Presbyterian Christian School girls' basketball team to three straight Class AAA Division II basketball championships, and last year (2008), the MPSA Overall Basketball championship. This past year, she was selected as a member of the A. R. Smithers-MPSA South AA-AAA Basketball all-star team, and the MPSA South All-Star Soccer Team. In addition to her basketball and soccer honors, Allison won the 2009 MPSA Track Class AAA 800 meter run and anchored the 1st place 4x400 meter relay team. Academically, Allison scored a 30 on the ACT and carries a 4.4 GPA at PCS.

The boys' recipient is Jonathan McKenzie of Starkville Academy. Johnathan has led his Starkville Academy football and basketball teams these past few years and has had unprecedented success both on and off the field/court. Amazingly, he was named to both the MPSA All-Star Football Game, and the All-Star Basketball Game, where he garnered the MVP for his team in each one! In addition to these all-star honors, Johnathan was also named to the All-MPSA Football First Team, the All-MPSA Basketball First Team, and The Clarion-Ledger First Team All-State Team. Academically, Johnathan scored a 30 on the ACT, and carries a 4.00 GPA at Starkville Academy. Johnathan will continue his education at Mississippi State University where he signed an athletic scholarship to play football beginning this fall.

The MPSA Family congratulates both of these individuals, and their respective schools, on their accomplishments.
